Course Overview

Course code: RIIWHS202E (Gas test atmospheres MSMWHS217 upon request)
Investment: $275 AUD (+ GTA $195 AUD if requested)
Duration: Day Course 6-8 hrs depending on numbers

The Australian Well Control Centre Enter and Work in Confined Spaces Program has been specifically designed for individuals that work across multiple of industries. Confined spaces are everywhere, and it is critical that workers know how to test atmospheres and work effectively in confined spaces. Confined spaces are Hazardous and need to be treated with the highest level of safety awareness.

The Enter and Work in Confined Spaces is run weekly in conjunction with our Gas test atmospheres Program (GTA) MSMWHS217. AWCC recommends combining your Ener and Work in Confined Spaces course with the GTA program to reduce the need for return training on separate days. Having these programs offered sequentially reduces the amount of operational downtime for training. Getting both core units completed in one day along with receiving the extra bonus units above presents great value and is an exclusive product offering brought to you by the Australian Well Control Centre.

Industry best practice under WHS guidelines suggests that testing an atmosphere before entering the confined space to work is critical to maintaining safety standards and most importantly the safety of site personnel.

The events above will be discussed in more detail in the AWCC Enter and Work in Confined Spaces program. All workers should be aware that toxic gasses are the silent killers and when tasked to work within these environments, they can be deadly. The Team at AWCC know this all to well with our instructors having a wide range of industry experiences and knowledge that they enthusiastically pass onto students. Knowledge saves lives and having a clear plan regarding how to work and on occasion survive these potentially dangerous situations is the AWCC point of difference.

Gas Test Atmospheres Performance Skills Learnt

  1. Locate and apply the relevant documentation, policies and procedures for a given situation
  2. Demonstrate that they can complete the entering of and working within confined spaces safely, effectively, efficiently and in a way that meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
  3. Obtain the appropriate entry permit to work and follow instructions for performing the work in confined space
  4. Interpret and apply the safe work methods for the site
  5. Apply tagging and lock out devices relevant to the work area and work being performed
  6. Selecting, wear and caring for personal protective equipment applicable to all tasks and the confined space environment identified
  7. Demonstrate the physical entry of the confined space
  8. Demonstrate the use of atmospheric monitoring devices prior to entering the confined space
  9. Perform work in the Confined Space
  10. Periodically test the atmosphere within the Confined Space by utilising an atmospheric monitoring device during confined space activity
  11. Apply industries best practice for safe materials handling
  12. Demonstrate the safe exiting of the confined space
  13. Sign Permit off and remove tagging and lock out devices

Gas Test Atmospheres Knowledge Skills Learnt

Upon successful completion of the program the candidate will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of Enter and Work in Confined Spaces by:

  1. Identifying areas that constitute confined spaces
  2. Complying with site and equipment safety requirements
  3. Comply with the entry and exit procedures, assess risks and adhere to site and Government Regulations
  4. Demonstrate awareness of types of air contaminants and toxic gases
  5. Be able to identify the limitations of breathing apparatus
  6. Demonstrate the identification of equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations
  7. Demonstrate compliance with site isolation, site control responsibilities and identify authorising parties
  8. Demonstrate the locations of safety data sheets (SDS) information and how to apply the information
  9. Show knowledge of utilising confined space and Industry terminology

Learning Methods

The modes of delivery for this program will be Face to Face, classroom based supported by a number of practical activities utilising AWCC’s Smoke House and Confined Space Facilities, these activities are designed to satisfy the Practical Element and Assessment of the course.

As mentioned above this program is not specific to one industry and those of you working in construction may be eligible for CSQ Funding to get you started. The course has Training and Assessment Strategies that make the program relevant to a participant’s work life experience, work history and practical experience.
